How to Memorize Scripture / Why Memorize Scripture / How To Meditate On Scripture

Do not accept excuses for not being able to memorize God's Word, no matter how young or old!

Psalms 119:11 is a key memory verse!

Psalms 119:11 "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

Memorize the Word of God so that God will not be sinned against.

All children should come into some understanding of this verse.

Important! Do not fail to understand this and encourage the students to Memorize / Meditate on God's Word.

Memorizing is Important, but.....

Meditating is Trying to Memorize and is just as important!

Do not accept excuses for not being able to memorize God's Word, no matter how young or old.
The problem is not in retention, but in trying. God has no trouble with some not being able to retain, but God is never pleased with anyone who does not try.  Most can retain, everyone can try.

Knowing the verses is good but attempting to know the verses, and attempting to know them over and over, is just as good. This is helpful in Meditating.  In other words, the person who has trouble memorizing may well be the best meditator because he meditates more than the person who can memorize easily.

Giving excuses for not Memorizing is a process of brushing off God's Word altogether.
Even if the verse is not easily retained or not retained at all, or never really Memorized to start with, the work in attempting to Memorize counts and the verses are Meditated on in the process.

Memorizing?
Memorizing in itself is of little value.  Getting the truth or value of the verse inside is the real aim.
Meditating (thinking about what the verse says) on verses is the thing that accomplishes both ends: understanding (making it useful); remembering (having it at our finger tips, but may not understand it).

Remembering the verse without understanding merits little, except it will allow the Lord to bring it to mind one day when needful.

But, understanding a verse almost always helps us remember it and help us use it.

Implementation
Some attempt to use memorization to understand verses, but there is a better way …

Meditate on the verse!
This is a Bible method.
This brings understanding.
This brings remembrance.

God's Word is very vast
My Bible is over 1500 pages long. If I don't know where to find something and need to recall it to help with the current problem, I may not be able to come up with the answer.

God's Word is not always handy
When dealing with someone about their souls, we need to be able to tell them what the Bible says without trying to look it up in a Bible that may not be present.
The answer is of course, having the verse tucked away in your heart through meditation/memorization.

Count on the promises
We don't want to forget what He has promised.
Nor forget the benefits of those promises.

Psa 103:1 "Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name."
Psa 103:2 "Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:"

Meditation / Memorization
Think on the Lord and say good things about what He has done, and don't forget all the benefits, either.

Meditating / Memorizing on the Lord and what He does helps us remember and understand.

Meditation / Memorization makes it much easier to recall Rom 10:8 "But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;"

Paul is saying that the Word is committed to the heart (memory) but it is also understood (because it is the Word of faith, he knows what he is trusting in and he preaches it.

How to Meditate / Memorize

Learn Meditating / Memorizing by …

        Thinking over, again and again

Job 22:22 "Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart."

Tuck away the words of God in your memory, so they can be mulled over as you memorize and brought up again and again after being memorized.

Learn Meditating / Memorizing by …

Appreciation of the Word and its author

Psa 119:15 "I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways."
Psa 119:16 "I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word."

Being appreciative of God's Word helps Meditation / Memorization

Learn Meditating / Memorizing by …

Consideration, day and night, of the Word

Psa 119:97 "O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day."

Thinking on God's Word and having a love for it every day and every night will help us learn Meditation / Memorization.

Psa 119:148 "Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word."

Drive sleep away, so that God's Word can be Memorized / Meditated on.

Learn Meditating / Memorizing by …

Thinking on the good things of the Word

Phil 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

Meditate (think) on good things.
Go over them again and again.
This will get them inside and understood, making them easily Remembered and Meditated on.

Learn Meditating / Memorizing by …

Teaching, Discussing, Posting of the Word

Deu 6:6 "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:"

Remember God's Word!!!

Deu 6:7 "And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."

Teaching, discussing and having the word constantly before the eye
will help us Memorize / Meditate on God's Word.

Deu 6:8 "And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes."
Deu 6:9 "And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates."

Display and post the scriptures
around for family and visitors.
Scripture is transferred to others by talking, discussing and displaying.

Benefits of Word Memorization

Kept from backsliding

Psa 37:31 "The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide."

When Scripture is keep in the heart it keeps us from sin.

Staying in God's Will

Psa 40:8 "I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart."

Having meditated on God's will (the Word) it becomes a delight to do.

Wisdom

Prov 2:1 "My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;"
Prov 2:2 "So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;"

Meditate (receive) and Memorize (hide ... with thee) the scriptures to employ (apply) wisdom and understanding.  The above verse takes the position that "receiving" and "hiding" the verse brings the wisdom and understanding that can be "applied."

Praising God

Psa 143:5 "I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands."
Psa 143:6 "I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah."

The results of having Memorized / Meditated on the Word

Replacing evil

Psa 119:22 "Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies."
Psa 119:23 "Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes."
Psa 119:24 "Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors."

The Psalmist used Meditation / Memorization as a replacement for bad news and bad advice.

Psa 119:78 "Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts."

Don't consider how you have been mistreated but think on God's Word.

Previous Meditations / Memorizations will anticipate future Meditations / Memorizations

Psa 119:148 "Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word."

"Prevent" is to anticipate.

True Understanding

Psa 119:99 "I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation."

Meditating / Memorizing brings understanding that the world has no knowledge of.

Wisdom keeps and delivers (Knowledge, discretionary preservation, understanding)

Prov 2:10 "When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;"
Prov 2:11 "Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:"

Wisdom and understanding do not come by way of memorizing, but by meditation which brings memorization and wisdom (understanding).

Meditation / Memorization brings the truth so we can use it in a discretionary manner to keep us.

Prov 2:12 "To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;"

Three Thirty Club Index Page

Meditation / Memorization brings the truth so we are not taken by the evil (those that conspire to sin) and the perverted (froword.)

Fearlessness

Isa 51:7 "Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings."

Meditation / Memorization over come fear.

Satisfaction and Joy

Psa 63:5 "My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:"
Psa 63:6 "When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches."

Prosperity, Success

Josh 1:8 "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."

Meditating / Memorzing gives understanding and remembrance for employing the scriptures in prosperity and success.

Praise and Motivation to tell others

Psa 77:11 "I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old."
Psa 77:12 "I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings."

The Psalmist is remember previous meditations and is going to meditate further about what God has done and tell others about them.

Descendants Benefit

Psa 103:17 "But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;"
Psa 103:18 "To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them."

Remembering the Word and acting on it brings mercy and righteousness to us and those that follow us.

Witness, Testimony

1 Tim 4:15 "Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all."

Memorizing / Meditating has a way of showing itself as a testimony to others.

Joy

Jer 15:16 "Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts."

Jeremiah ate (put in his heart) the scripture and it was a joy to his heart.

Helping others

Col 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

Memorize / Meditate (dwell) on the Word to help and correct.

The Holy Spirit helps remember

To teach if there is something in side to recall to remembrances.

John 14:26 "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

To encourage if there is something in side to recall to remembrances.

Luke 24:8 "And they remembered his words,"
Luke 24:9 "And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest."

Everyone was encouraged because they had remembered the Scriptures.

John 2:22 "When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said."

Everyone was encouraged because they had remembered the Scriptures.

John 12:16 "These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him."

Everyone was encouraged
because they had remembered the Scriptures.

Teach others and teach the young

Faithful Men

2 Tim 2:2 "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."

Expect faithful men to Meditate / Memorize the Word and pass on.

1 Tim 1:18 "This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;"

The context here is not about Memorizing / Meditating on the Scriptures, but it is certainly implied.

Children

2 Tim 3:15 "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

The smaller chidren must accept most of the scriptures by faith, then understanding comes later.
Many in the younger ages are not saved and have no spirit for the Holy Spirit to speak to.

Psa 71:17 "O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works."
Prov 8:17 "I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me."
Prov 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
Eccl 12:1 "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;"
Mat 22:29 "Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God."

Many times Solomon in the book of Proverbs starts out with the words, "My son …" teaching his son the Scriptures and the practicality of them.

Scripture Ignorance can be Detrimental

Poverty, sinfulness

Jer 5:4 "Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God."

Poverty and sinfulness may be brought on by no wisdom or understanding of the Scriptures, either not having Meditated / Memorized the scriptures thereby gaining wisdom or refusing to use what they know.

We mention Meditation / Memorization here because good judgment has to be something that comes from within. There is little time to search the Scriptures when good judgment is needed.

Sinful

Mat 22:29 "Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God."

It is an error to not Meditate / Memorize and thereby not receive the understanding of the scriptures.

Blinded

Eph 4:18 "Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:"

The heart, without the truth of the scriptures, is blind.
